Southern Grey Shrike
The Southern Grey Shrike (Lanius meridionalis) is a medium-sized bird occurring in southern Europe, northern Arica, and parts of Asia (up to China and northern India). Throughout its range, the birds favor open, arid habitats with few bushes or small trees. Most of the time, they sit on perches looking out for prey which includes insects, small reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and other birds. Similar to other shrikes (e.g., the Red-backed Shrike), the birds commonly impale their victims on thorns where they are kept as food reserves. I have photographed this elegant species during field work in Kachchh, western India, in January 2015.

How long were you in India for Matthias?
oh, I do research in Kachchh and visited the area several times – each time for a few weeks – unfortunately, I never had the chance to spend a few days for the cultural and natural sights of the area! The photographs and sightings I took of birds and other wildlife were just chance encounters during work! But I really love the country! Did you ever go there?
