The Spot-billed Duck (Anas poecilorhyncha) is a water bird occurring in tropical and eastern Asia (from Pakistan and India through Southeast Asia up to China and southern Japan). The birds inhabit mainly freshwater lakes and marshes. Their diet consists predominantly of plant matter collected by dabbling in shallow waters. In addition, insects, frogs, worms, and small fish are also occasionally caught. Outside the breeding season, the ducks are quite gregarious and form small flocks. I have photographed these pretty birds at the central water tank of Bhuj, the district capital of Kachchh, India (January 2015).
