Ayutthaya Historical Park
While we originally planned to reach northern Thailand by backpacking through Laos from Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Time restrictions forced us to take the easier route via Bangkok. Since we visited the city before, we took a day off to see some of the surrounding sites – most importantly, the Ayutthaya Historical Park. This field of ruins is all that remains of the magnificent city of Ayutthaya, the capital of Siam from its foundation in 1351 up to its demolition in 1767. It is believed that the city was inhabited by up to 1,000,000 people during its heyday in the 17th century. Even if this number might be exaggerated, this place was definitely one of the world’s largest cities at that time! No wonder, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.
Once back from our short sightseeing tour of Ayutthaya, we had a few hours in our hostel before the overnight bus took us to Chiang Mai all the way in the north – but you have to click here for the next post to read about that!
