India 2018 (part VIII): Khuldabad

Khuldabad, Maharashtra:

Tomb of Sufi saint Zainuddin Shirazi

On our way back to Aurangabad from the Ellora Caves, we stopped at the small village of Khuldabad.

Khuldabad seems unremarkable, but it contains the tombs of several Sufi saints as well as the prominent Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb was the sixth and last effective Mughal Emperor ruling for an impressive 49 years from 1658 until his death in 1707. During his reign, the Mughal Empire covered almost the entire Indian subcontinent and constituted the world’s largest economy creating ten times as much annual revenue as that of his contemporary Louis XIV of France! Nevertheless, Aurangzeb was ruthless towards his opponents, orchestrated the execution of his brothers, and also confined his father Shah Jahan at Agra Fort while declaring himself emperor. Unlike his father (who commissioned the Taj Mahal) Aurangzeb never showed a lot of interest in architecture and following his own wish, he was buried in a very simple tomb inside the dargah of Sufi saint Zainuddin Shirazi.

After leaving Khuldabad, we returned to our hotel in Aurangabad to stay the night before going on another sightseeing adventure on the following day.

  1. Really enjoyed visiting Khuldabad, Matthias, and hearing about the Mughal Empire. As always, your photos were great. I found the one with the shoes especially interesting.
